After a huge home win at his new club, defender Keven Schlotterbeck spoke on what it felt like to play at the famous Ruhrstadion and score his first ever Bundesliga goal.

To be the elder brother of German national team sensation Nico Schlotterbeck is, irrespective of what the 25-year-old might say on the matter, to live in a frustratingly odd shadow. Keven Schlotterbeck’s slightly younger brother Nico is a German national team player whom Borussia Dortmund considered worth shelling €20 million out for this past summer.
Keven, in contrast to his younger brother’s estimated market worth of €33 million, is valued at €3 million. The elder Schlotterbeck sibling was relegated to the bench at Freiburg this season and had yet to score a Bundesliga goal. That is, of course, until today. Backed immediately by VfL trainer Thomas Letsch, Keven defender heroically and snuck in the 2-0 against Hertha off a corner shortly before half-time.
Keven focused on the privilege of starting in his post-match interview with Sky Germany.
“It was fun just to be on the pitch again,” Schlotterbeck said, “With a goal, with a win and this demonstration of will power. We need to win at home and nick points on the road. Today was super.”
Keven also had something to say about the famous atmosphere on the Castropher Straße.
“One can really get the feeling of how it gets rockin’ here,” Schlotterbeck said of the fan support, “It’s awesome.”
Having achieved back-to-back wins just before the World Cup break, the Revierklub now find themselves on a three-game-winning streak. A team that opened the league campaign with six straight losses has pulled itself up to 14th place in the table on 16 points. The 1848ers have won five of their last ten matches.
“Our passion and mentality enabled us to consistently improve,” Letsch said when commenting on his team’s performance, “You could see the unconditional drive [to succeed]. There’s no other way to be successful in the Bundesliga. All in all, it was a deserved victory. We showed again that we are a team that believes in ourselves.”
