Hübner to miss Hoffenheim's game against Köln

Germany’s preeminent footballing publication cites its own internal sources to claim that TSG 1899 Hoffenheim captain Benjamin Hübner might be preparing to call it a career soon.

Benjamin Hübner.

A variety of injuries have severely limited TSG 1899 Hoffenheim skipper Benjamin Hübner from representing his team on the pitch for the past three seasons. The 33-year-old missed the entire 2020/21 campaign, appeared in just six fixtures last season, and has not been available for the Kraichgauer at all this year since round one of the DFB Pokal.

TSG trainer André Breitenreiter recently commented that his captain’s rehab wasn’t producing any positive results. In addition to recurrent back problems, Hübner is dealing with a damaged ankle ligament. Germany’s Kicker magazine cites its own sources to claim that the TSG medical staff have found no way of stemming a swelling reaction that leaves the player in constant pain.

This is evidently what Breitenreiter was referring to last Friday when he commented that Hübner “couldn’t make any forward progress”. As per Kicker, it looks increasingly likely that the middle son of German footballing great Bruno Hübner might be considering retirement. The Wiesbaden native’s club will certainly wish to have some clarity with regard to his situation.
