Less than 24 hours after confirming the sale of Malick Thiaw to AC Milan, FC Schalke 04 have brought in a new no. 5 via a loan-out from Liverpool. Twenty-year-old Dutch youth international Sepp van den Berg will spent the season in Gelsenkirchen on loan.
Many details of the loan-out were not disclosed. Presumably, van den Berg has signed a new contract with Liverpool as his current expiring deal with the Merseysdie Reds would not have allowed for a loan. Sky Germany reports that the youngster has done so and that Schalke have no purchase clause.
“We are very happy that Sepp has opted for us over other interested parties,” S04 sporting director Rouven Schröder noted in a statement accompanying the signing, “With him, we have acquired a fast central defender who will liven up the competition in the squad in the way we intended after the departure of Malick Thiaw, We are convinced that he has the potential to fill that gap.”
“I was delighted when I heard that such a big traditional club like Schalke 04 was interested in me,” van den Berg himself added at the unveiling, “The decisive was the talks with Rouven Schröder and [head-coach] Frank Kramer. They got me excited about Schalke’s path and I will now follow it with full conviction.”
Van den Berg has not yet appeared for his parent club in the Premiership. He’s gone unused on the bench whenever selected for Jürgen Klopp’s matchday squad. The youngster has accumulated extensive experience whilst on an extended loan with Preston North End run the EFL Championship. The estimated €5 million valued defender made 61 appearances across all competitions for PNE.
