The Chelsea fan base is often torn when deciding on the future on Jorginho. The Italian’s contract will be expiring in the summer of 2023 and Thomas Tuchel will need to make a decision. Following his FA Cup final performance, the pendulum has swung back in Jorginho’s favour.

His control in midfield coupled with his seamless passing strategy is something so unique to his game. He is a unique kind of midfielder that Chelsea may have problems replacing.

It is now a question of whether or not Chelsea cash in on him this summer, or do they take the gamble and hope for more performances like that of the FA Cup final. He will be turning 31 this year which puts Marina Granovskaia and her team in an uneasy predicament. There are pros and cons to keeping such a unicorn in the Chelsea side.

It’s proven that Chelsea become unsettled without Jorginho in the side. Since the turn of the year, bar one, Chelsea have lost every single match that Jorginho has started on the bench. Brentford, Arsenal and Everton have possibly been the worst performances that we have seen from Chelsea this season and his absence was missed greatly. It is no coincidence that the Blues have struggled when he is not on the pitch. Jorginho keeps that momentum flowing on his best days. He is the reason that Chelsea are able to maintain the majority of their possession in games.

Taking away a player like this from the equation is a recipe for disaster. Once again, the Italian was the catalyst for keeping Thomas Tuchel’s side in the game against Liverpool. He had an eye for key passes and adapted to Liverpool’s frightening speed with the ball. He made more interceptions and tackles than any other player on the pitch whilst dominating with the ball. It’s one thing to deliver a stand out performance, but it holds a lot more weight doing it against one of the best teams in Europe.

It mustn’t go unnoted that the Italian has had his struggles this season. He hasn’t remained 100% consistent, but he has been playing through a lot of pain. Thomas Tuchel previously confirmed that the Italian was playing through pain whilst Mateo Kovacic and N’golo Kante were out with injury. Both players have missed 31 games in total, of which Jorginho has had to deliver through difficult circumstances. He is proven to be the type of player that will want to give his all for the club. Play in uncomfortable situations whilst still giving 100% on the pitch. Why would you want to let a player like this go?

The most pressing argument is that Chelsea needs a more traditional central defensive midfielder. I agree with this, however, it doesn’t mean that one has to go. It’s a tricky decision to make and I understand where fans may feel that his time is up. But after that FA Cup performance, my opinion rests with the minority. Give Jorginho a new contract or at least let him see out his current one. It’s too early to let him go.
