A 6ft 3ins defensive midfielder sounds like a player that Chelsea could use. Declan Rice or Aurelien Tchouameni would be the obvious and ideal candidates but how about a much cheaper alternative.
And when we say cheap, we mean free. Boubacar Kamara, Marseille’s prize defensive midfielder has refused to sign a new contract in hopes to sign with a big club this summer. A signing like this will solve any issues with a Rice or Tchouameni transfer as the club will still be able to focus on strengthening other areas this summer.
Alongside Tchouameni, Kamara is one of the most sought-after young midfielders in Europe right now having acquired interest from Manchester United, Atletico Madrid and AC Milan. Considering the number of reinforcements that may be needed in Chelsea’s transfer window it would be a smart move for the Blues to consider.

Thomas Tuchel’s wishlist this summer will include at least two centre-backs, as well as wing-back cover for Reece James and Ben Chilwell. The chances of Chelsea spending more than £150million on two midfielders this summer are slim. AS Monaco have placed an €80-€100 million price tag (between £68million and £86million) on Tchouameni whilst West Ham remain unmoved with their £100million-plus valuation of their captain. The necessity to spend big numbers on transfers can be avoided if they take a look into Kamara’s situation.
The young Frenchman is reportedly close to signing a deal with Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid. According to Marca, he has been offered €4.5million (£3.8million) per year to join the former La Liga champions next season. The fact that Simeone himself is interested in this calibre of player is interesting – the defensive king usually has an eye for quality, defensive players.
Looking into his style of play, Kamara embodies an aggressive, traditional type of defensive midfielder. Maybe not as technically gifted as Chelsea are used to with Jorginho, but his physicality is enough to protect the backline. He is incredibly dominant in aerial and ground duels which is an attribute that the Blues have missed from their midfield collective.
The aim is to find a midfielder with different attributes to those of N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho. The Blues need a traditional defensive midfielder and this is a cheap option. Aurelien Tchouameni and Declan Rice are not the only midfielders available in the world. At this rate, for the betterment of the squad, settling for one of the two, and bringing in freebie Kamara would be a great decision.
