Antonio Conte believes that Tottenham Hotspur need “time and patience” to win the Premier League and admits “we have just started this path”.
Those who listen regularly to the Italian might just have noticed a slight change in the way he speaks about Spurs in recent press conferences and it might make them a little more positive about the chances of him remaining in charge next season after his post-season meeting with chairman Daniel Levy. For Conte used to refer to Tottenham in a slightly more distant way, making a clear separation between himself and a side that was challenging at a level beneath where he normally operates, but in the past week or so he has begun more regularly using terms such as “we” and “our”.
When answering a question ahead of the north London derby against Arsenal about whether it will be easier for Tottenham to sign players to revamp his squad if they can qualify for the Champions League, Conte’s long answer was full of such possessive words, including “my club”, suggesting that perhaps he is growing more attached to his current place of work.

“Every club in England that wants to compete for the title has to invest important money, not only Tottenham. I read recently Arteta say they want to have another step forward and want to be competitive for the title,” he said. “For sure you have to make a big investment because you can organise your team and give every type of information to take care of the details, to train well but you need to have important players because top players bring you to win.
“In the last season City bought Grealish, Chelsea bought Lukaku, United Sancho, Varane and Ronaldo. If a top team to improve themselves has to spend a lot of money, you have to think a team a bit lower than the others how much do they have to spend to be competitive? I agree with Pep [Guardiola] when he says the money is not the only important thing. Pep is the best and has worked very hard with his layers and has created a monster.
“You can see his work, but at the same time the money is important to improve the level, the quality of your team. This is a general speech, not for my club, because you asked me about winning the title and to win the title, Tottenham needs time, patience and then to go step-by-step. We have just started this path because the others now are at the end of this path and they build a solid foundation and can add one or two players to improve their squad more. Now we are at the start of this path and we need more time. You can’t think you can change the situation in one transfer market or one season. For this reason time and patience.”
He added: “Honestly I don’t know [if finishing fourth will make a difference in the transfer market]. For sure to take a place in the Champions League you get money. Maybe £40-50million, I don’t know. To play Champions League is important for many reasons because you get money from UEFA for this competition.
“You can play the best competition in the world but at the same time you have to know to take a place in the Champions League in England is very, very difficult and this season United missed qualification, otherwise in my mind you start with the four teams at the top. At the start the race for the Champions League seems close, four teams – City, Liverpool, United and Chelsea. Then it happens during the season that someone can be in trouble and you have to be ready to stay there. It happened this season. We are trying with Arsenal to find a position in the Champions League. I repeat: In England, it’s like to win a title in another country, it is a big achievement.”
