Arsenal have been told that summer transfer target Darwin Nunez is going to cost upwards of €75million (£62m).

The Benfica forward is a wanted man after impressing not only in the Primeira Liga but the UEFA Champions League, scoring against Liverpool in the quarter-finals and finding the back of the net in the round prior up against soon to be Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag.

His exploits this season have seen him on the radar of all the top clubs around Europe and many are expecting a flurry of bids incoming when the transfer window opens at the end of the season. The Gunners are a club who are likely to be involved in negotiations for the 22-year-old and have been given an idea of how much they will have to spend.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano took to social media early on Saturday morning to announce that Benfica would be hiring Roger Schmidt as their next manager until 2024 and followed that up by saying that Nunez will be leaving in the summer. However, it was the line that a reported numerical figure would not be enough to sign the sensation which would have alerted Arsenal and other clubs.

“Darwin Nunez will leave the club, and €75m now could not be enough,” wrote Romano. “Talks opened for David Neres as target, confirmed as reported by @ojogo – but nothing agreed yet.”

Nunez is believed to want a move to a club playing the UEFA Champions League next season, with Arsenal on course to do via a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League. The Gunners take on West Ham United on Sunday knowing that a win take them eight points above sixth-placed Manchester United having played a game less.

The north London outfit will be on the lookout for a senior player to lead the line with Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette both out of contract when the season ends. They have also been linked with a move for Man City forward Gabriel Jesus.
