Arsenal can use Nicolas Pepe in order to bring down the price of their ideal striker transfer target in the summer transfer window. The Gunners are reportedly chasing Victor Osimhen from Napoli, but his price certainly brings doubt concerning securing his signature.

According to The Sun, Arsenal wants to sell Pepe this summer to raise funds for transfers. They are prepared to take a massive hit on £72m they paid for him. The Gunners are reportedly prepared to accept £25m for the winger.

This comes after claims from Italian news outlet La Gazzette dello Sport that the Gunners have set their sights on Osimhen, and are currently in the lead when it comes to important Premier League clubs chasing his signature. The report also goes on to say that Napoli are likely to demand £82m for the striker.

Arsenal signed Pepe from French club Lille in the summer of 2019. But the Gunners were not the only club chasing his signature as Napoli were also hot on his tail.

Napoli were so close to completing the signing of Pepe that the Lille president confirmed that the Serie A side had met the necessary demands. “Napoli have satisfied our request of 80m euros. Now it will be up to the player to decide where to go, also on the basis of other proposals that his agents received from four clubs,” Lille president Gerrard Lopez told Tuttosport.

However, the Ivorian winger decided to join Arsenal instead. But three years on, the north London side needs to make the decision whether to keep or sell Pepe at the end of the season, as he enters the territory of having less than three years left on his contract.

Keeping him beyond two years remaining on his contract will massively debunk his value and increase the threat of losing him on a free transfer which would be an absolute nightmare considering his £72m price tag.

The Ivorian joined the club in 2019 for a club-record fee of £72m from Lille with the highest of expectations due to his success in Ligue 1, but has only contributed with 27 goals and 17 assists.

Edu could use Pepe as part of negotiations with Napoli to sign Osimhen considering how determined the Serie A side was to secure the Ivorian’s signature in 2019. The Nigerian international certainly would fit the Arsenal profile, and he has previously been courted by former Gunners manager Arsene Wenger. Osimhen has been the star player for Napoli and his national team since making the switch from French side Lille in 2019 after scoring 18 league goals in a single campaign.

Osimhen is an athletic, quick and imposing attacker. He mixes a lightning turn of pace with long-distance speed and is certainly more than capable of being a prominent threat on the counter-attack for Arsenal.

Using Pepe could be a key factor in Arsenal’s negotiations to bring down the price of Osimhen. It seems the Ivorian’s time in north London has come to an end, but a move to Napoli could benefit all parties involved.
