Arsenal centre-back William Saliba has impressed during his current loan spell with Marseille this season but his future remains uncertain. There have been plenty of calls for the 21-year-old to be included in the first-team squad at the Emirates from next season and finally make his debut.

Saliba was signed by Unai Emery in the summer of 2019 from Saint-Etienne but he was immediately loaned back to the Ligue 1 club for the following campaign. He has worked his way up the French division with subsequent spells with Nice and Marseille this season.

This season has seen him move to another level, however, thriving under the guidance of Jorge Sampaoli and even earning his first call-up to the France first team. But there remain fears among Arsenal fans that they will never see the talented defender strut his stuff in Mikel Arteta’s side.

“I’ve never hidden the fact that I feel good here. I don’t know what my future holds, there’s still two months to go,” Saliba told RMC Sport via The Mirror back in March. “The most important thing is to qualify for the Champions League and go as far as possible in the Conference League.

“I think discussions will take place afterwards, at the end of May to early June, between Arsenal and Marseille – we’ll decide at that point. “But staying on here would definitely not be a bad idea, on the contrary, I know the city, my teammates, my manager. But it doesn’t depend on me.”

This season has seen Saliba appear in all but one match for Marseille in Ligue 1, becoming a crucial part of their chase for Champions League football. Now, his agent has provided a further update on his future.

“We still don’t know what Arsenal want to do with William,” Djibril Niang told Freddie Paxton. “We will have a discussion about this very soon I think.”
