Chelsea could be forced into the January transfer market following the latest news on left-back Ben Chilwell.

football.londonunderstands that the England international is now set to miss the remainder of the season as he requires surgery on his knee ligament injury this week.

Chilwell suffered a serious knee problem in the second-half of the Blues’ comfortable Champions League victory against Juventus last month after a collision with Adrien Rabiot.

The Chelsea defender was always set to be missing until the New Year, with the decision over whether he needed surgery proving pivotal on his return date – and, unfortunately for the 25-year-old, he may have played his last match of the campaign already.

So, with Chilwell out for the time being, it may force Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel into the transfer market next month as he looks to keep tabs with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City in this season’s title race.

They of course have Marcos Alonso, who can play as the left wing-back and has been doing so in Chilwell’s recent absence, but Tuchel is rather light in that position otherwise.

According to a report from the Telegraph, the Blues are interested in signing Lucas Digne from Everton, with the French left-back falling out of favour under Rafael Benitez at Goodison Park recently.

As well as this, versatile Barcelona defender Sergino Dest is also being considered, the report claims. The USA international has played on the right and left-hand side of defence during his time in Spain – so he could prove a very handy option for Tuchel.

What’s been said on Digne?

As mentioned above, Digne has fallen out of favour at Everton. The 28-year-old has not played in the Premier League under Benitez since the 4-1 defeat to Liverpool earlier in December and has not been involved in the last three match day squads.

Benitez, when asked about Digne, insisted the former Barcelona man needed to “focus” on the team.

He said: “We need all players around because that increases the competition, but at the same time everyone has to be focused and realise the priority has to be the team.

“What he has to do is ensure he continues working hard and the team is ahead of any individual.”

What’s been reported on Dest?

According to a recent report from ESPN, Barcelona are ‘prepared to listen to offers’ for Dest in January to help fund other signings.

However, unfortunately for Chelsea, Bayern Munich are said to be interested in the American full-back and could look at his situation when the January transfer window opens.

Dest signed for Barcelona in 2020 from Ajax for around £17million, with Bayern being pipped to his signature, but the German club have reportedly kept close tabs ever since his move to La Liga.
