Chelsea fans have demanded significant January action in the left wing back position after Ben Chilwell was ruled out for the rest of the season.

Chilwell, 25, is expected to miss the remainder of Chelsea’s season, with the England international set to undergo surgery on his knee ligament injury this week, football.london understands.

It was during the second half of the Champions League victory over Juventus last month that the 25-year-old hobbled off following an innocuous-looking collision with Adrien Rabiot.

Chilwell underwent a scan that revealed he’d sustained a partial ACL tear. The decision was then taken for the wing-back to begin rehabilitation work at Cobham rather than undergoing immediate surgery.

“The decision is to treat it conservatively,” Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel explained. “The next six weeks will tell the story if he makes it and will be fully available within this six weeks, or after the six weeks or needs surgery after that.

“Now I only care about the six weeks. The first reaction of his body is very positive. Hopefully, it stays like this.

“This is the decision after all the examinations and it is a very responsible decision, there is no rush in it and no pressure. This is a reasonable way to do it so all the focus is on the next six weeks.”

Initially, it looked like being good news for Tuchel and co. regarding Chilwell’s progress, with some reports saying he could be back for the Tottenham Premier League game in January, although the latest update on his condition means that is clearly not now the case.

Instead, all attention turns toward January and how Marina Granovskaia and co. react to this news, with the potential signing of Lucas Digne from Everton or the possibility they could or recall Ian Maatsen from his loan spell at Championship side Coventry.

It seems Chelsea fans have already decided what they want to see happen in this specific situation.

Here is the best of the reaction here.

@NoahK796 tweeted: ‘Digne on loan in Jan with option to buy and banish Marcos Alonso at end of season.’

@surennnn11 reckons: ‘Digne to Chelsea more likely no.’

@CarefreeAdz concluded: ‘Surely we are gonna sign a new lwb then.’

@jeebafootball alternatively suggested: ‘Digne or Kostic @ChelseaFC.’

@kelvinChuulu made a good point: ‘We can just recall Emerson.’

So far, there have been tenuous links to the Everton left-back but could another Frenchman now be on his way to west London in January in the form of Theo Hernandez?

There are so many hypothetical situations which could come to fruition now and Thomas Tuchel’s expectation of a quiet transfer period may have now ended.
