Chelsea fans have mocked Ralf Rangnick’s Blues snub amid Manchester United’s early wobble under the German’s reign.
The Red Devils have dropped vital ground in the race for top four as they were fortuitous in the end to come away from St James’ Park with a point in the 1-1 draw against Newcastle on Monday night.
Those dropped points mean that the ex-RB Leipzig manager currently has a 50% win rate from his first four games in all competitions for the Old Trafford club.
In comparison, his German compatriot Thomas Tuchel had attained a win percentage of 80% in his first five games in charge of the European Champions.
The Blues were once close to securing Rangnick on the interim basis, but he decided to reject a move to the capital due to the proposals offered to him.
“At the time when Chelsea contacted me, in February, they only spoke about the option to become interim manager for four months, without any prospective to work in the long-term together,” the ex-RB Leipzig manager said when he joined Man United.
“Here, now we are talking about six-and-a-half months. We only have one-third of the games played in the Premier League and we have also agreed upon a two-year advisory role after those six-and-a-half months and, to be honest, if a club like Manchester United contacts you for such a role, you cannot possibly turn it down.”
Other themes that came up in his unveiling press conference centred around how he could close the gap at the top to the current Premier League third place side.
“It’s about winning games and, in the end, I’m very ambitious,” Rangnick added.
“We want to make the most successful season that is possible. Right now, we have to be realistic. The difference between us and the top three is big. But let’s see.”
He added: “The major target for me is just to bring more balance to the team. We conceded two goals yesterday [against Arsenal] and if you look at the total number of goals conceded, it is an average of two a game.
“That is just too much. Those are not the kind of games you need every day. In football to me, it’s to minimise the coincidence factor.”
So far, these pledges and plans haven’t entirely worked out and despite Chelsea’s winter wobble, there is currently a 13-point gap between the two sides.
Initially, fans of the west London club were fearful with others of the positive impact that the former Lokomotiv Moscow director would have at Old Trafford after he took over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
However, the result against relegation-threatened Newcastle has prompted a sense of relief from Chelsea supporters who are glad to have Tuchel in charge.
Here’s the best of the reaction on social media.
@CFC_Ryxn mocked: ‘United fans were telling us Rangnick was clear of Tuchel and Klopp.
‘Not even clear of Ole in my eyes.’
@CFCLhans reckons: ‘Klopp and Tuchel gave Rangnick a career.’
@HarryCFC170 is confused: ‘I don’t know where Tuchel and Klopp gained their knowledge from, but it definitely wasn’t from Ralf Rangnick.’
@CFCPys delivered his opinion: ‘Tuchel would win trophies with United’s squad, I don’t know why Rangnick can’t get the best out of them since he’s supposedly his daddy.’
@slivahCfc tweeted: ‘They said Ralf Rangnick trained Klopp and Tuchel yet he can’t win a poor form Newcastle….’
@BigbyCFC is thankful: ‘Lol whatever Ralf Rangnick taught Tuchel and Klopp, we are happy they didn’t listen.’

Chelsea fans will hope their 13 point buffer to United extends when the Blues face Brighton under the lights of Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night, with Man Utd due to host Burnley a day later at Old Trafford.
