Willock reveals contract offer
Joe Willock has revealed that he had an offer from Arsenal to extend his contract at the Emirates Stadium in the summer, but turned it down due to playing time concerns.
He later decided to join Newcastle United on a permanent transfer worth £25million having impressed whilst on loan in the months prior.
“In May, I told my father, ‘I’ve reached a stage where I want to play’. That was the key for me,” Willock revealed to the Athletic. “When the permanent deal became possible, I said, ‘We should look into this more because I love the city and the fans’.
“I sat down with Arsenal, was honest about my situation. They were really good with me. We had a conversation about signing another contract but I really wanted to play, I loved Newcastle and this was the best option. This is where I can push on.”
The Magpies have had a disappointing season so far, but they will be able to flex their new financial muscle in the upcoming January transfer window.
Aubameyang decision proven right
Alan Shearer has praised Mikel Arteta for making such a big decision in stripping Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from the Arsenal captaincy.
“It was a big, brave decision from Arteta to do what he did because with a personality, who Aubameyang was, the captaincy on the salary that he’s on,” Shearer said.
“But he has to show discipline because he’s got a young team who he’s trying to send a message to. They now know that they can’t mess around; they can’t be late for training or whatever the situation is.
“And the players agree with the decision that Arteta’s made. Because you can tell in their performances. Arteta needed his players to back him up in terms of giving him the goals, giving him the performances and they’ve done that in style.”
