Emile Smith Rowe emulates Mesut Ozil after moving closer to Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal objective – Bailey Keogh

Emile Smith Rowe is currently showing that he has the ability to emulate Mesut Ozil after he prematurely reached his target for this campaign.

The youngster has been excellent for Arsenal this season, whether that’s when he is included in the starting line-up or asked to make an impact from the bench.

He has been one of Arteta’s most consistent players since breaking into the side in December of last year, which also helped him earn the Fans Player of The Year award for 2021.

Smith Rowe took the number ten shirt from Ozil, and he has certainly been showing that he is worthy of taking over from his predecessor.

At the start of the campaign, the 21-year-old said: “I’m hoping to get over 10 goals and assists this season.”

After his goal against Norwich on Sunday, it meant that Smith Rowe reached 10 goal contributions already, with the season still yet to reach its halfway point.

Even more significantly, he has almost doubled his goal contribution tally from the whole of last season where he made just six contributions.

It’s also an achievement that brings Smith Rowe a step closer to Mikel Arteta’s demands.

“An incredible season for a No 10 of Arsenal means he needs to score 15 goals and give 10 assists. Then you are right up there with the top guys in Europe and in the league. He’s got the ability to do it but he hasn’t done it,” Arteta said last season.

His excellent performances this year helped him receive his first-ever senior England call-up by Gareth Southgate ahead of the November international break, where he made his first appearance and scored on his debut against San Marino.

The Hale End star has become the fourth Arsenal player under the age of 21 to score in three straight Premier League games, the previous three being Nicolas Anelka, Jose Antonio Reyes, and Cesc Fabregas.

The youngster took the number ten shirt after signing a new contract in the summer, which meant he was tasked with taking the reins from Ozil who had some excellent moments with the Gunners in the attacking midfield position.

Smith Rowe has been replicating the same influence, and if he continues his excellent goal contribution prolificacy, he will without a doubt eclipse the German in terms of the impact he will have on the club.

The 21-year-old has been left out of Arteta’s starting eleven recently, but this has only increased the hunger for the youngster to reclaim a place in the side which has been shown with his three goals in his last three substitute appearances.

His desire to get back into the team highlights the strong mentality of the midfielder, and this is also a major reason why he’s set to reach his target for the season so quickly.
