Antonio Conte has revealed why he has made three changes as Tottenham travel to take on Southampton in the Premier League.

After Spurs’ recent Covid outbreak, their players have returned and they will be hoping for another win after their Boxing Day victory over Crystal Palace.

When the Lilywhites played Palace earlier in the season, they lost 3-0 but with a new manager and improvements being seen under Conte, they managed a victory at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Despite the victory, the Italian has decided to make three changes with Ben Davies, Dele Alli and Harry Winks all returning to the starting XI.

Davies has been the first choice to play on the left side of the back three but it was Japhet Tanganga who got the nod against Patrick Vieira’s side. However, the Welsh international returns to the starting XI against Southampton.

Winks and Alli have both received criticism from fans in recent times, but have both already improved under Conte and they have been given a place in the starting line-up for Tuesday’s tie.

The biggest shock may be that Lucas Moura has been side-lined for the game on the south coast, after his solid display and goal against Palace.

The 52-year-old was asked about the changes he has made, ahead of the tie, in his pre-match interview with Amazon Prime Video.

“Three changes. Winks, Dele Alli and Davies. This is a busy period and for this reason it’s good to make rotations and give a good balance in your team,” Conte admitted.

“It’s not simple to recover in only 48 hours. That’s all. Honestly, I was impressed with the attitude that they showed me during the training sessions.

“To following tactical work, physical work and I was impressed about this in a positive way.”

The Italian was then asked about the prospect of Champions League football for his side, who are currently fifth in the league, six points behind fourth-place Arsenal but with three games in hand.

“Now is very early to talk about this,” Conte explained. “We go game by game, step by step. Today to win here is not easy.

“Southampton won their last game against West Ham. You know West Ham is a really strong team. They bring an intensity and with the same manager for many years. I think they’re really dangerous.”
