Antonio Conte explains how Tottenham are coping with Covid concerns ahead of Southampton clash

Antonio Conte has described the Premier League’s current Covid-19 situation as a ‘big mess’ but thinks that Tottenham and other clubs are doing their best to deal with the problems caused by positive cases.

Tottenham take on Southampton this afternoon [Tuesday 28 December] at St Mary’s but some players wouldn’t have known about the results of their PCR tests until this morning.

With just 48 hours between that game and their last against Crystal Palace on Boxing Day, the current Covid testing requirements means that while everyone takes daily lateral flow tests, the Spurs players will have taken another PCR test on Monday without knowing the results of those more accurate tests until the next day.

Conte has admitted that the situation makes it difficult to prepare for a game, but the club are starting to get used to it.

“Yeah, but it happened when we were having the problems two weeks ago. When I said that we were having training sessions, I was preparing for the game and then at the end of the training session you can have a positive player in your team,” Conte said on the testing issues.

“This is a big mess because you can prepare with a player that the next day you can’t, but especially your players that are positive can infect the other players.

“But I think now we’re doing very well because before the training session there is a rapid test and then the other test you have the result the day after.

“I think this is a good solution because you know with the rapid test. It’s not 100 per cent but there’s a good percentage of reality in this test, no?”

Nevertheless, the situation hasn’t impacted Spurs’ performances on the pitch.

With four wins and a draw – against second-placed Liverpool – in their last five games, Conte has got Tottenham playing to the best of their ability again, and they will be confident about extending that form with another win over the Saints.
