Arsenal fans have reacted to news that Ainsley Maitland-Niles could leave the club in favour of a move to Serie A giants Roma in January.

The 24-year-old was persuaded to stay by manager Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu last summer when Everton made a late attempt to sign the versatile midfielder.

Maitland-Niles posted on social media at the time: “All I want to do is go where I’m wanted and where I’m going to play.”

However, he hasn’t featured for Arsenal since the 1-0 win over Watford at the beginning of November, and he’s ready to leave the club to secure more playing time.

Roma are in advanced talks with Arsenal over signing Ainsley Maitland-Niles on loan, football.london understands.

Jose Mourinho is an admirer of Maitland-Niles and football.london understands the Hale End academy product has already spoken with Tammy Abraham who joined the Italian giants from Chelsea last summer.

A loan fee and terms of the deal still need to be agreed before the signing is sanctioned, but Maitland-Niles’ want for an Arsenal exit is likely to be accepted this time around.

With that in mind, Arsenal fans have theorised that the club will sign a midfielder in January.

Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny are travelling to the Africa Cup of Nations with Ghana and Egypt respectively, and could be out of club action for the best part of two months depending on how far either of them make it in the competition.

To avoid being left short in midfield, fans feel that the club need to bring a player or two in.

Some have asked for Edu to pursue Lille talent, Renato Sanches, who has been linked to a move to north London for some time now.

Take a look at some of what’s been said on Twitter.

There’s been no suggestion as to who the club might replace Maitland-Niles with just yet, but you’d have to think that a signing is likely, especially if the Gunners wish to continue their top-four challenge.
