Alan Shearer makes big claim on Antonio Conte and Lucas Moura since Tottenham arrival

Alan Shearer thinks that Tottenham Hotspur have already considerably improved under new boss Antonio Conte.

The Italian has only been in charge for a handful of Premier League games since taking charge in early November, but Spurs have already climbed back into fifth in the table.

Conte’s side are currently six points behind north London rivals Arsenal but have played three games less than the Gunners as a result of Covid-enforced postponements earlier this month.

Nevertheless, even with such a big disruption off the pitch, Conte has made Tottenham hard to beat again. Some of their players are really stepping up in the new system too, something that was evident in their latest 3-0 win over Crystal Palace.

That’s certainly the opinion of Shearer, anyway, who was particularly impressed by the performance of Lucas Moura against the Eagles.

“[Conte has] certainly got them very well organised and he’s making a big difference to Lucas Moura, and also Oliver Skipp, who I thought was excellent,” he said on BBC’s Match of the Day.

“They just couldn’t handle Lucas Moura today. The positions he got into, his ability to actually run with the ball caused them all sorts of problems.

“He was too quick for them – [for the opening goal] the give and go, Andersen can’t catch him and he puts it on a plate for Harry Kane – he’s not going to miss from there, thank you very much indeed.

“The way he starts [the second goal], Skipp there, who as I said I thought was excellent, really brave on the ball, started so many good moves off. But look at the way [Moura] gets it, look at his desire – he said he’s only a small guy!

“But it’s also wanting to get on the end of that more than the defender.

“He gained another assist there for Son [as well]. So yeah, Tottenham and Conte have really made a difference. And improving as well.”

Spurs travel to Southampton next to face Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Saints and Conte will be confident that his newly inspired Spurs can come away with all three points.
