Thomas Tuchel gives Timo Werner a rare chance to lead the line as Cristiano Ronaldo is benched – Scott Clayton

Chelsea faces Premier League rivals in Man United this afternoon and Thomas Tuchel has made three changes to his lineup today.

N’Golo Kante and Ben Chilwell both picked up injuries in the convincing 4-0 win over Juventus mid-week as Marcos Alonso and Ruben Loftus-Cheek replace them. The other change see’s Timo Werner get a rare chance to lead the line with Christian Pulisic dropping to the bench.

If Chelsea does manage to get the win it will see us open up a 15 point gap to Manchester United which would surely knock them out of the title race before Christmas.

Tuchel has a lot of depth on the bench with Mason Mount, Pulisic, Kai Havertz, Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku to call upon if needed.

The main talking topic will be the fact Michael Carrick has decided to bench Cristiano Ronaldo to the bench. The likelihood is he wants his team to press and work hard at closing Chelsea down and play on the break, and Ronaldo doesn’t fit the bill.

It’s the same back three as Leicester and Juventus matches with Trevoh Chalobah getting the nod over club captain Cesar Azpilicueta yet again.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek is clearly now ahead of summer loanee Saul. His power and ability to glide past a challenge will be helpful with Mateo Kovacic still missing due to injury.

We will need Marcos Alonso to be at it today as he comes against Jadon Sancho who scored his first goal for Man United midweek against Villarreal. This is the position I’m most worried about. If Sancho is on form and Alonso gets lost as a CF we might have gaps for Man United to punish us on the break.

Marcos Alonso comes in for the injured Ben Chilwell

Jorginho usual partner in Kante is missing and he and Chilwell will be huge losses to the side this match.

Hakim Ziyech gets back to back starts which is a shock to me with Mason Mount back fit again but his trickery and unpredictability could be a great way we unlock this Man United side that I expect to sit back and soak up Chelsea attacks

It’s wonderful to see Callum Hudson-Odoi keep his spot on the left of Chelsea’s attack after his influential outings over the last few weeks.

I think this match could be won through a set-piece with Man United missing club captain Harry Maguire due to a sending off last match against Watford

Chelsea have found it hard to beat Man United in the league in recent times with our last league win coming from an Alvaro Morata headed goal back in 2017.

Chelsea XI: Mendy; Chalobah, Thiago Silva, Rudiger; James, Loftus-Cheek, Jorginho, Alonso; Ziyech, Hudson-Odoi, Werner
