Tottenham can complete Erik Lamela transfer trick despite surprising Antonio Conte claim

Tottenham Hotspur could be set for a busy January transfer window as Antonio Conte looks to stamp his authority on an underperforming squad.

Following a bitterly-disappointing loss to NS Mura in the UEFA Europa Conference League on Thursday night, Conte admitted that he is currently evaluating what players are not good enough ahead of the winter window.

The former Chelsea boss is known for his ruthlessness and he will likely be keen to add a number of quality first-team players to help improve Spurs’ consistency in the second half of the season.

Now, Italian outlet Calciomercato have claimed both Conte and transfer chief Fabio Paratici are interested in signing Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo and could potentially attempt to bring him to the club in the New Year.

The report also states that Roma are desperate to keep the Italian but talks regarding a new contract appear to have stalled in recent times, with Juventus also monitoring his situation.

However, Zaniolo, who is valued at £36m on Transfermarkt, has previously admitted that his playstyle doesn’t particularly suit Conte’s 3-5-2 system

“For a coach like Conte, I would even play in the 3-5-2,” Zaniolo told FC Inter News in February, before admitting that the veteran coach’s system doesn’t suit the way he likes to play.

“(But) it wouldn’t suit me very well considering my way of playing and how I like to move on the pitch.”

Still, Spurs have been linked with the 22-year-old well before Conte’s arrival at the club, with the young playmaker named as a potential target during Nuno Espirito Santo and Jose Mourinho’s respective stints in north London.

If Tottenham were able to convince Zaniolo to join in the coming months, it wouldn’t be the first time that the Lilywhites have signed a player from Roma, with Argentine winger Erik Lamela joining back in the summer of 2013 for £27million.
