Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has suggested that Arsenal transfer target Raheem Sterling can still improve despite an upturn in his fortunes over recent weeks.

The England winger has endured an inconsistent season at the Etihad Stadium thus far despite having starred for the Three Lions during their Euro 2020 campaign.

He has netted just four goals in 17 appearances so far for the reigning Premier League champions in all competitions, with his place at the club looking somewhat shaky.

Sterling has been linked with a move to Barcelona, whilst Arsenal were also credited with an interest as his contract at the Etihad continues to tick down towards its final year.

The 26-year-old has shown signs of getting back to his best form recently though, intriguingly with the January transfer window just creeping around the corner.

He managed to find the net against both Club Brugge and Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, whilst also getting on the scoresheet in City’s 3-0 win against Everton last weekend.

Guardiola has praised Sterling for his recent improvement but has called on him to up his performance levels even more.

Talking in a press conference ahead of his side’s clash with West Ham United, the Spaniard said: “I am so glad for him, it helps us that’s for sure.

“Of course, he will fight to be better and better. It is important for the strikers and wingers to score a lot of goals for us and a lot of assists.

“He was decisive. He was completely decisive in what we have done in the last three years.

“Scoring goals gives a lot of confidence, but still he knows he can do better and be aggressive and win duels one against one and arrive in the final third.

“This is a step to get back to his best form.”

It is not the first time that Guardiola has had his say on Sterling and his future with the club.

Amid reports that the winger would consider leaving Manchester City for regular game time, Guardiola responded with surprise.

Speaking back in October, he said: “I didn’t know [he had considered leaving], I think the club didn’t know it either.

“Raheem is our player, hopefully he’ll be incredibly important player for us. I don’t know if he’ll play more.”
