Edu given £30m Arsenal incentive to sign midfield replacement after Emile Smith Rowe announcement – Tom Canton

Arsenal fans have been deprived of England representation for some time after Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck fell out of favour with the international setup.

However, the last 12-plus months have seen Bukayo Saka work his way into the fold. New Arsenal signing Ben White was called up for the Euro 2020 squad and fellow new arrival Aaron Ramsdale is due his first cap in the upcoming round of fixtures.

However, the big news was that Emile Smith Rowe has earned his first senior call-up to Gareth Southgate’s side and could feature in either of the two matches against San Marino or Albania. Smith Rowe has impressed scoring in Arsenal’s last three successive league fixtures.

However, the call-up does precede the associated risk of injury. The 21-year-old would have been playing with the England youth side, however, the increase of intensity at the senior level comes with an increased chance of afflictions.

Having been bid for several times in the summer by Aston Villa, the offers reaching as high as £30 million, the market value of Smith Rowe will only increase after the latest developments.

However, his value to Mikel Arteta and Arsenal has skyrocketed since he has found his shooting boots.

Arsenal have been solid defensively on their ten-game unbeaten run conceding just four goals, however, their offensive abilities continue to come into question with seven of the ten games not seeing the Gunners score more than twice.

Smith Rowe also has a history of injury issues which kept him out for many parts of last season. The need to sign Martin Odegaard on loan in January was much down to this doubt around the Hale End graduate’s fitness.

With Smith Rowe even more vital presently than ever before and the winter window approaching again, technical director Edu has the incentive to look at possible replacements for the England international should he get injured.

Links with Marco Asensio of Real Madrid make sense. The Spaniard can play in multiple positions similar to the 21-year-old.

Club Brugge winger and forward Noa Lang also makes sense with the Dutch international impressing with his goalscoring abilities not just domestically but with his performances in the Champions League too.

Edu has the options, whether he decides to act may come down to any further injuries between now and the window opening. Gabriel Martinelli, Nicolas Pepe and plenty of impressing youth players could be internal solutions should priorities in January lie elsewhere.
