Dusan Vlahovic’s agent, Claudio Pasqualin, has revealed that “the existence of bigger offers” is the reason behind his client’s decision to turn down Arsenal.

A report from Gianluca Di Marzio last week suggested that the Gunners were seriously interested in signing the 21-year-old, whose contract with Fiorentina expires at the end of next season, but the same news outlet claimed more recently that Vlahovic’s agents have stopped taking calls from the north London club.

The Serbia international is waiting for “bigger offers” to come his way, according to his agent, who name-checked Real Madrid as a possible destination for his client should the Spanish club make an offer.

“The reason is the existence of bigger offers,” Pasqualin told Firenze Viola. “Evidently, he has contacts, relationships and prospects with teams that offer more.

“Arsenal is one of the most coveted teams in the world, but if there is Valladolid offering twice as much, you think about it… I see the economic aspect as more important.

“The route he is following is based more on economic needs… but maybe there is Real Madrid behind him, and he goes to play there: it would not be shocking; he has the numbers to do it.”

Vlahovic has been in fine form for Fiorentina this season, with the Serbian forward scoring 10 goals in 13 appearances in all competitions.

So, with statistics like that, it comes as no shock that he is being linked with the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham, but according to Daily Express reporter Ryan Taylor, Spurs are the only club with a genuine interest in the forward.

Taylor says that the Gunners are not currently targeting Vlahovic, and those claims are backed up by Goal journalist Charles Watts, who took to Twitter to deliver an update on the situation.

Watts said: “Lots of talk about Vlahovic and Arsenal. My understanding of the situation is there have been no negotiations and he is not a target.

“Signing a forward clearly will be high on the agenda next summer, but as it stands he is not one they are looking at.”

This goes against claims from Di Marzio, via Football-Italia, who says that Vlahovic’s agents were avoiding Arsenal and not answering their phone calls regarding their interest.

Vlahovic turned down a contract extension to stay in Florence, according to club president Rocco Commisso last month.

“When I arrived in Florence, I promised the fans that I would be up front with them and that I would never make promises that I couldn’t keep,” the Fiorentina chief said.

“I would therefore like to update the Fiorentina fans on an issue that has been much talked and spoken about in recent months – the question of Dusan Vlahovic’s contract.

“As you know, Fiorentina made a very significant offer to the player. Our proposal would have made him the highest-paid player in the history of the club.

“We also improved our offer on a number of occasions in order to accommodate the requests of both Dusan and his entourage. However, despite our efforts, those offers have not been accepted.

“During my time in Florence over the past few weeks, I have personally endeavoured to find a solution that would make both the player and the club happy, but I am disappointed to say that our efforts and attempts have not been rewarded.

“At this point, all that we can do is acknowledge the wishes of the player and his entourage and quickly identify feasible, appropriate solutions as we proceed with this exciting new season.

“In any case, Dusan Vlahovic has a contract linking him to Fiorentina for the next 21 months. We have no doubt that the player will – as he always has – do his bit to help the team achieve its objectives, showing the same level of professionalism he has shown since he arrived in Florence, with the utmost respect from our fans, his team-mates, the coach and the club as a whole.”
