Mikel Arteta forced into early £55m decision as Watford win changes Edu’s January transfer plan – Tom Canton

Arsenal’s victory over Watford was a hard-fought win which never should have been as difficult as the Gunners made it. A disallowed goal, a missed penalty, a criminal offside goal steal and a rare Aaron Ramsdale lapse of concentration could have lost them a couple of points.

However, Arsenal could point much of the issues in the game towards their captain and current leading goalscorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The Gabonese forward missed his second penalty in successive league home matches.

The 32-year-old was also the guilty party when denying Martin Odegaard, a fabulous solo goal all his own making. The striker greedily tried to poke home to get his own goal, perhaps in an attempt to atone for his previous actions.

The striker has suffered from consistent lapses in good form. Some games working hard and impressing with tenacious running to close down defenders. Linking up play as shown against Tottenham and Aston Villa.

Yet, it is clear he is on a gradual decline as he moves further into his early to mid-thirties.

The performance against Watford will have only furthered the club’s decision to accelerate plans to pursue a striker.

The position was certainly going to be a focus this summer with the futures of Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah very much up in the air. Their deals are set to expire at the end of the current campaign and January exits are not yet ruled out.

Yet the club has seen links with players touting moves as early as this winter. In particular, has been the recent transfer stories surrounding Fiorentina forward Dusan Vlahovic.

Reports suggested Arsenal had agreed to pay La Viola the asking price of 80 million euros. However, the player himself has been less keen on the idea and supposedly willing to wait for a better offer from one of Europe’s elite clubs.

In reaction to the struggles in the striking department, the Gunners may need to give the Serbian striker a greater incentive to change his mind this winter.

Failing that, looking at alternative targets would not be ill-advised. The Arsenal Way has previously suggested other options for Edu to consider in the coming windows.

With two months still to go before January, Mikel Arteta must aim to get the best from his side.

Matches against Liverpool, Manchester United, West Ham and Everton are yet to come and Aubameyang will need to be much improved to give the Gunners the best chance of accumulating the highest number of points and keep them in the race for the top four.
