Michael Arteta has confirmed that Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will continue to be his first-choice penalty taker.

Aubameyang has missed his last two spot-kicks, with his latest effort coming during the Gunners 1-0 defeat of Watford on Sunday afternoon.

The Gabon international stepped up from 12 yards after fellow forward Alexandre Lacazette was fouled by former Tottenham Hotspur defender Danny Rose in the first half.

However, he saw his effort saved by Hornets shot-stopper Ben Foster, who then claimed the ball before Aubameyang could score from the rebound – as he had done against Aston Villa last month.

After the penalty, a number of Arsenal supporters took to social media to call for Lacazette to be the club’s main penalty taker given the Frenchman boasts a 100% record from the spot since joining the north London outfit back in the summer of 2017.

Still, after the full-time whistle Arteta confirmed that the former Borussia Dortmund forward will continue to assume penalty-taking duties if he wishes to do so.

The Spaniard said: “He will stay on penalties if he happy to do so.

“You will miss if you take penalties, that is part of your career and the job and we will try to help him.”

The win means Arsenal now sit fifth in the current Premier League standings, two points behind fourth-placed Liverpool, who lost to West Ham United on Sunday.

The international break will ensue before the Gunners travel to Anfield to face Jurgen Klopp’s side in a fortnight’s time.

The Reds have won their last five league meetings in Merseyside, with Klopp enjoying an impressive record when facing Arsenal.
