Emile Smith Rowe has been called up for his first-ever England squad.

The 21-year-old has impressed for the Gunners in recent weeks, providing seven goals and assists already this term, scoring the only goal of the game during a Premier League win against Watford on Sunday afternoon.

Despite his goalscoring exploits, the talented playmaker was left out of the England squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Albania and San Marino – leaving Arsenal supporters fuming with Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate.

However, Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford and Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse pulled out of Southgate’s squad before Smith Rowe was named as their replacement on Monday afternoon.

Gunners legend Martin Keown has previously made it no secret of his admiration for the youngster, urging England to call him up earlier this year.

“The England squad was named today and Lingard has made it in,” Keown told BT Sport back in March.

“He has done exceptionally well as well, but I think Smith Rowe is unlucky not to be in there.

“Lingard has only played 6 games since his loan, all good games but the impression and influence he has had on this Arsenal team, Smith Rowe and Saka, is absolutely outstanding.

“I see him as unfortunate to not make the full squad.”

Similarly, Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher predicted Smith Rowe’s inclusion in an England squad, claiming that the Hale End academy graduate will definitely be capped by his country in the coming months.

Speaking to Sky Sports last month, Carragher said: “He’ll (Smith Rowe) get England caps, absolutely no doubt. I mentioned in commentary that it’s a nice problem for Gareth Southgate that we’ve got an abundance of great young attacking players now.

“There’s so many players Southgate must be wondering not only how he can fit them in the team, but how he can get them in the squad and he’s another one.

“He will get England caps, there’s no doubt about that. He’ll have to bide his time as there are other players ahead of him right now.”
