Michel Vorm believes Antonio Conte’s brutal mentality will be evident within the Tottenham dressing room following his appointment as manager.
Conte was given an 18-month contract on Tuesday afternoon and the Italian will be looking to end Spurs ‘ 13-and-a-half-year wait for a major trophy after taking over from Nuno Espirito Santo.
The Italian has been out of a job since leaving Inter Milan at the end of last season, where he reportedly left the San Siro after a disagreement with the club’s board over their transfer plans.
Conte, who guided Chelsea to the Premier League title in 2017, is notorious for being ruthless with his players – and if he does not like what he sees from a person, they will not be involved in his plans.
The 52-year-old has a clear ideology and that is what makes him one of the best and most well-respected coaches in the world of football.
Vorm, who left Tottenham in 2020 after six years with the north London club, has offered an insight into the Spurs dressing room at the moment and also made a prediction regarding Conte and how he will go about getting the best out of his new squad.
Speaking to BBC 5 Live, the former Netherlands goalkeeper said: “I think also if you’ve seen the documentary you could see there were some fights going on in the dressing room.
“So, for the likes of obviously the captain Hugo Lloris and let’s say Harry Kane if you’re looking at the team now, Eric Dier, you know these guys they will definitely say something.
“But again, you know, if you look at the whole situation the last few years, it’s been so up and down and I think Tottenham doesn’t really have like an old school leader in the squad that will say: ‘Hey boys, we need to change this around’ but they focus on their own performance as well.
“Look at Harry Kane this season, he’s struggling scoring goals in the Premier League and then it’s also hard to be that leader in a way.
“So I understand what you’re saying but for sure they will say something to each other in the dressing room but especially now with the likes of Conte, he will make sure that the players are gonna, they need to speak more and be more direct with each other as well.”
Vorm also spoke about the form Tottenham showed under Nuno and believes there was a lack of “togetherness” within the squad that ended up costing the team.
He added: “It’s easy when people just say: ‘You need to work hard’ but it needs to be a collective thing and then the quality will come.
“With the likes of Harry or Son or who else but if that’s not the case then I think the last months you could tell that Tottenham was not, as a team, they were not togetherness on the pitch.
“I mean, I think it was too much individual and everyone has their own problems in a way you know, so you could tell on the pitch, it was not as a team.
“I think Conte is definitely the man who can bring that back and he’s gonna be very clear I think and if you’re not on board, you’re out.”
Conte took charge of his first Premier League match for Tottenham on Sunday, with the visitors held to a goalless draw with Everton at Goodison Park.
