Jamie Redknapp believes Aaron Ramsdale has already overtaken Jordan Pickford as England’s first-choice goalkeeper in recent weeks.

Ramsdale, who signed for the Gunners over the summer transfer window for around £25million from Sheffield United, overtook Bernd Leno as Mikel Arteta’s number one goalkeeper earlier in the season and has impressed in between the posts ever since.

The 23-year-old has kept five clean sheets in his eight Premier League appearances for Arsenal and his form has seen him rewarded with a call-up to the latest England squad.

England boss Gareth Southgate spoke about the inclusion of the Gunners shot-stopper in the week and highlighted how good he has been since making the £25m move.

“It’s great for him. This is the third squad he’s been in, he had the summer with us,” Southgate told the media in the week.

“We were impressed with what he did in the summer and he started very well with Arsenal. We’re really pleased with what he’s doing and the way he’s playing.

“We’ve got competition for places and we need competition places in every position. Aaron and Sam are definitely providing that to Jordan.”

Ramsdale kept another clean sheet for Arsenal on Sunday afternoon as Arteta’s team built on their nine-game unbeaten run with three points against Watford.

Speaking about the form of the England international before the game, Redknapp and former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere discussed whether he has what it takes to become the first-choice shot-stopper under Southgate with the Three Lions.

Wilshere believes he has what it takes, saying this to Sky Sports: “You could always see he had something in training and the he got his move – had a tough time – and got relegated twice.

“I think that says a lot about his character because when Arsenal signed him the fans, people in football, were battering him.

“To come here and perform the way he has, not just with his saves but the way he plays out from the back, he’s changed the whole dynamic of the Arsenal team and I’m really happy for him because he’s a good guy.

“I think so (he can become England’s number one), I don’t see why not. I know Pickford has got it at the moment but I know he’ll be pushing him a lot.

“He can play out from the back, I know Pickford can as well. His distribution is just as good as Pickford’s and he can definitely become England’s number one.”

Redknapp intervened: “I think he is now. I wouldn’t be surprised if plays the next games. He surprised me I got to be honest, I got it so wrong with him.

“I thought it was a very strange signing but it just shows you need good advice, good goalkeeping coaches telling him what to do and he’s been a revelation because he’s given them that confidence at the back.

“Leno wasn’t good enough, go and buy this guy and he’s been magnificent.”
