Pep Guardiola and Man City are set to hand Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs a big advantage compared to the so-called smaller sides in the next round of the Carabao Cup as the five substitution rule is set to be re-implemented in Round four.

All of Southampton, Leeds and Burnley are set to suffer minor setbacks already before the London trio takes on the aforementioned teams respectively in the Round of 16 stage with their bloated squads.

During project restart, the five substitutes rule was welcomed by all due to the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on all squads but now that we are returning to a sense of normality, some teams wanted it gone permanently.

Except for Guardiola and City who have been pushing this idea through with limited chance of it turning out to be a successful one.

However, as the Daily Mail has revealed, City have now managed to garner support from 13 of the 16 clubs who are still in the tournament

.At City’s prompting, each has now written to the EFL to make their feelings clear and, while discussions are ongoing, it would appear that the Spaniard’s plan may get the green light.

The report goes on to add that the EFL will speak to the sides who do not support the City manager’s stance, to gauge their opinions before making an official announcement on their decision.

But with such overwhelming backing, their stance may well change ahead of the next set of fixtures on October 26 and 27.

Mikel Arteta, Thomas Tuchel and Nuno Espirito Santo will be delighted with this news, especially considering the congested schedule all face after the international period officially comes to an end.

The former has even been on record backing the five substitutions rule in the past, so not much would have changed from his current opinion on the situation, to the one he delivered before the season got underway.

Asked for his thoughts on the Premier League discussing bringing back five substitutions, Arteta replied: “I would strongly support that because we are here to give the best possible show at the end of the day.

“In order to do that we need the players, they are the most important part of that, and we have to be conscious that we have to protect them.

“We are constantly exposing them. They haven’t had any holidays. They are going to play international football every time there is an international break. They have a competition this summer and it goes on and on and on.

“At the end of the day we are going to have some really bad news with players that, at the end of the day, we are not respecting. And we can change some things, even if it is not ideal. But given the context we are in at the moment, it would be really helpful in my opinion.”

Now, it’s not the Premier League, but the Carabao Cup is as important to all three London clubs in the sense of it being a chance to win the first silverware of the season.
