Brazil legend Rivaldo has maintained that Harry Kane is an ‘excellent professional’ and his subsequent dip in form has nothing to do with the fact that he wanted to leave Tottenham in the latest transfer window.

Kane dominated the headlines for much of the summer after it became apparent that he wanted to leave Spurs to compete for trophies with Manchester City.

Tottenham and Daniel Levy did well to keep their star talisman, but he hasn’t replicated his form of old so far this season, and some have questioned whether that’s because his mind is still set on a transfer elsewhere.

Kane is yet to score in the Premier League, and although he’s found the net on six occasions in all competitions, his all-round game hasn’t been up to his usual impressive standards.

Nevertheless, Rivaldo has insisted that he has no reason to purposely be underperforming.

“The England captain was criticised for his performance against Hungary in the 1-1 draw and the same is happening at his club with some underwhelming performances,” the Brazil legend told Betfair.

“Kane tried to leave the club in the summer, and many are pointing to that as the main reason for his bad performances, but I have to disagree. Kane is an excellent professional and he is representing a big club so has no reason to be unmotivated.

“In my opinion, he is simply out of form at the moment. He must keep doing his best at Spurs, a club he says he loves. And for him personally, it would be harmful to keep playing badly for a season if he still wants that big transfer.”

The former Barcelona star continued by suggesting that Kane will get going again and that should help improve Tottenham’s fortunes.

“I’m a fan of Harry Kane’s qualities and style of play, so, I can only wait that he finds his rhythm soon and helps to propel Spurs to a good season,” he added.

With that in mind, Rivaldo isn’t the only football legend who thinks that Kane will come out of a bad patch.

Speaking in Derby County’s pre-match press conference ahead of the Rams’ clash with Swansea at the weekend, ex-England and Manchester United captain, Wayne Rooney, said: “He is one of the best strikers in the world and when you don’t score, unfortunately, people have their opinions which they are entitled to, of course.

“Harry is a good enough player and a big enough person to come through this period. All strikers go through moments when they don’t score and Tottenham are not in the best vein of form themselves, so that is down to the team.

“I think when Harry gets his first goal in the Premier League then he will get back to scoring on a regular basis.”

Spurs face a difficult trip to newly taken over Newcastle on Sunday and in order to come away with three points, they’ll need their star man fully fit and firing.
