As one former Arsenal midfielder is being linked with a return, another is being tipped for a second spell in English football.
According to The Sun, Gunners manager Mikel Arteta is considering the possibility of re-signing his former teammate Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on loan from Liverpool in the next transfer window.
Meanwhile, some Arsenal fans think there could also be a surprise return for a certain Mesut Ozil as early as January.
Although, not to the Emirates Stadium, but instead to Newcastle United who, after their stunning £305million Saudi Arabian-backed completed takeover, are now the richest club in the Premier League.
Given businesswoman Amanda Staveley, who helped the Saudi consortium complete the takeover, has set a long-term goal of the Magpies winning the Premier League, her vow to invest in the playing squad makes the January transfer window all the more interesting.
Already Newcastle have been tipped to target some big names, whilst in a dream scenario, they could hand Arsenal a welcome £125m transfer windfall.
But could they target a former Gunner?
After being frozen out by Arteta, Ozil eventually departed Arsenal last January after reaching an agreement to terminate his contract and subsequently joined Turkish outfit Fenerbahce on a free transfer.
Since then he’s undergone somewhat of a revival. Trusted with the captain’s armband at times, the 32-year-old has four goal involvements (three goals, one assist) in nine appearances across all competitions so far this season.
Whilst there has been no suggestion of Newcastle being interested in Ozil, or vice-versa, the attacking midfielder posted a cryptic message on Twitter over the weekend that has sent some fans into a transfer frenzy.
“Exciting things coming soon,” he wrote.
Despite this four-word message most likely having nothing to do with a potential move, many have a theory that it’s related to Newcastle as it comes just days after their takeover was completed.
Take a look at some of the best responses, as even some United supporters got in on the act…
