Chelsea fans will be relieved to hear that the Blues have the most Premier League goalscorers so far this season as the European Champions face the prospect of competing against Brentford without Romelu Lukaku.
Lukaku, 28, suffered a slight muscular injury during Belgium’s 3-2 defeat in the Nations League semi-final against France and as a consequence, is a doubt for the clash against the Bees at the Brentford Community Stadium on Saturday, October 16.
“Yes, we had Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku in a very similar way,” Red Devils manager Roberto Martinez said in his post-match press conference after the Les Bleus defeat.
“Both got overload in the muscles in different areas and unfortunately, we didn’t have the facilities in the camp here to be able to work and the way we like to work with our medical people. So we had to send them back and release them from camp. We will work in Belgium with them to try to get them fully ready for their clubs as soon as we can.”
Alongside the fact that Chelsea’s squad is inflated with attacking talent which would allow for manager Thomas Tuchel to fill the temporary void left by the 28-year-old with relative ease, a certain statistic has emerged that should reduce the anxiety amongst the Blues fanbase as we look ahead to the west London clash that is on the horizon.
This is because the west Londoners have 12 different league goalscorers so far this season which tops the charts in this category with title rivals Man City currently in second place with nine different goalscorers.
Unsurprisingly, club record £97.5million striker Lukaku leads the way for the European champions with three goals.
But other goal scorers have come in the surprise form of defender Trevoh Chalobah and the usual fruitless Mateo Kovacic, who have both already contributed this season with important strikes and headers in various different games.
Despite this impressive stat, you can guarantee that the perfectionist in Tuchel still will be annoyed with the innocuous injury that his new talismanic striker picked up during this October international period.
The German has already stated the importance of Lukaku to any chances Chelsea have of mounting a proper and significant Premier League title challenge, whilst also apologising to Inter Milan fans in the process.
“I’m sorry for the Inter fans but like everyone we try to improve. We identified a certain profile, a very physical striker, a reference, a player with personality who could take the pressure off the shoulders of the youngest. A player who allowed us to play faster football,” the 48-year-old coach said in a recent interview.
“There aren’t many players like that. When we have the chance to bring Lukaku back, it was an important moment for us. He said he was fine where he was, he worked extraordinarily with [Antonio] Conte and Inter.
“But then returning and finishing his career in England, where he played as a young man, was important. Lukaku wanted to play for Chelsea for these reasons and everything went well.”
The full list of the 12 different Blues league goalscorers are as followed; Antonio Rudiger, Marcos Alonso, Thiago Silva, Reece James, Ben Chilwell, Trevoh Chalobah, Mateo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante, Christian Pulisic, Kai Havertz,Timo Werner and finally the aforementioned Lukaku.
